ACE-Inhibitors NOT Associated With Early Severe #COVID-19 Disease- Breaking Research With Worldwide Implications Thanks To Digital Health

Breaking research from King's College Hospital​ London shows that ACE-inhibitors are NOT associated with early severe COVID-19 disease.

This is groundbreaking with immediate worldwide implications as it shows that patients do NOT need to stop their antihypertensives, which is in contrast to initial anecdotal reports from other sites during the early days of the pandemic.

This means our patients will NOT have to then present to hospital with hypertensive crises; heart attacks; stroke; or otherwise due to stopping their ACE-inhibitors, which would have substantially added burden to already strained healthcare systems worldwide. Patients will continue to benefit from the cardioprotective remodelling effects of these medications, and can safely continue them even if infected with coronavirus.

The speed of this research was greatly aided by digital health platform CogStack, which enables natural language processing to effectively mine data for medical research.

Universal Telehealth in Australia Begins Today - Here's What You Need To Know

"Universal Telehealth" was announced by Australian Federal Health Minister Greg Hunt yesterday. That means from today, we're all eligible for bulk-billed Medicare telehealth consults in Australia.

Telehealth = over the phone, or over video call eg. Skype, FaceTime, Zoom, WhatsApp. This is really useful for things like appointments to follow up on blood results; counselling; referrals; anything that doesn't require a physical examination. You may be already using Telehealth, whether you’re a clinician practicing it for remote patients; or as a patient who’s received care online or over the phone.

You may still need to attend in person if the doctor needs to examine a lump, excise a melanoma, or other condition.

GPs, Specialists, Midwives, Psychologists, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workers, Social Workers- a range of providers are able to do this (if they choose to), saving you the visit to a clinic, and saving the healthcare worker the added exposures from them going to clinic or seeing more patients in person in an era when we're all social distancing and at risk of bringing #COVID19 home to our loved ones (and lacking Personal Protective Equipment to protect ourselves).

This also helps vulnerable healthcare workers #workfromhome or from other safe, protected premises so the 70-year-old specialist with diabetes for example could continue working safely if they wish.

Many providers are also offering privately-billed Telehealth consults for those items that are not covered by Medicare, such as Physio and Dietitian consults for non-eating-disorder-related conditions. Your clinic or provider will be able to inform you.

Healthcare workers, check your indemnity covers Telehealth- it should. A phone call or visit to your indemnity provider's website will help.

Also, be aware of the privacy of free software. As mentioned on Avant: "The Department of Health has noted that free versions of these applications (i.e. non-commercial versions) may not meet applicable laws for security and privacy. You should check whether the platform you wish to use complies with Australian privacy and security laws. You can do this by asking the vendor or checking the vendor’s website."

Preparation, Not Fear: Tips For Working and Living in Isolation during COVID-19

Hit the news right now and you’ll see almost nothing but sadness and negativity about COVID-19. Rightly so; it’s a pandemic; it’s a rapidly accelerating #globalhealthemergency, and not enough seems to be done by many leaders til it’s too late.

As we mentioned, it’s easy to feel despondent and helpless about the future. We can’t fix everything, but we can focus on the things we can. The current projections are that this will be around for at least a few months, if not, longer; and decisions on working, studying, travelling, and socialising are changing rapidly literally overnight. If you’re not used to working, studying or living in isolation or confined quarters, what can you do?

How are some ways to prepare for home isolation or working from home:

1) Keep up your exercise, eating and daily health routines

It’s absolutely vital that we keep up our immunity, whether we have access to gyms and sports groups in normal life, or steps, water bottles, exercise bands and barbells at home. Download a fitness app (such as this one, which has home exercises you can do without gym equipment!); watch YouTube for free fitness classes; do some starjumps, pushups, lunges, and squats every hour; do a few walking laps or light jogs within the confines of your home every hour; take a break from the screen every hour so your eyes can adjust. And yes, it’s okay to let the sunlight in (though wear sunscreen if you sit in direct sunlight); no one’s said that COVID-19 seeps through windows at present!

Obviously, if you’re in quarantine because you fit the criteria for recent overseas travel or immediate contact with a confirmed COVID19 case, which is what the current Australian Government guidelines are for testing, you will need to take it easy and self-monitor more closely for signs of symptoms, rather than exercising yourself through respiratory failure in the worst case scenario. But, you have good judgment; use it.

And, of course, use the chance to cook (or learn to cook!) some delicious, nutritious healthy meals for yourselves

2) Keep up your daily hygiene routines as though you’re still going to the office/uni/school

Seems like a silly thing to say, but it’s quite common when working from home to be tempted into staying in pajamas without a shower all day! The WHO Handwashing recommendations for preventing COVID-19 is not just for handwashing; taking a shower obviously will help wash off any germs just like washing your hands will. We were befuddled to see the local supermarket handwash shelves stripped bare, yet creaking with 1-litre bottles of shower gel right next to it!.

Plus, keeping your daily hygiene routine also helps reset your “home” mindset for “work/study”, and thus help you with your productivity.

3) I’m unemployed/a casual worker unpaid during isolation/unable to do my usual job at home because I’m a mechanic or otherwise

We’re not going to make light of this; it’s a huge issue for millions of people around the world, and there is a LOT that needs to be done by Governments, employers, insurers and other structures to help protect you in times like these. And, it is scary.

Instead of focusing on the negative, let’s think about the positive. The time off may just be for two weeks. Or even a month in some cases, or longer, which is daunting, and in the realm of what you CAN’T control. But think about the following, which you CAN control:

  • Is there some skill or unique knowledge I have that I can turn into a product or service offering online or over the phone? Could you be a coach? A tutor? Write and sell an eBook? Sell an online course? Platforms like Teachable and Thinkific provide free classes on how to plan, create and launch an online course, simply with your laptop. It can take time, but it can be as simple as you need. You don’t necessarily need to film with your face in front of the camera if it doesn’t suit you. The best thing is, once COVID-19 is over, or even beforehand when quarantine is over, your product or service can still be there, running along in the background when you return to work, or when you hit the ground running looking for other jobs. That’s basically your side-hustle helping you with an additional income stream, no matter what your employment situation is at any stage in your life; no matter how small the income may be at first; and during isolation, it helps to keep your mind active and focused on a goal and outcome to prevent worrying about the unknown.

  • What have I always wanted to do or wished for more time for, but couldn’t because I was working/studying? Barring the ones like “travel to Europe” or “hike Kilimanjaro”; perhaps you’ve wanted to spend more time with your children; organise your photo albums; learn to paint; reorganise your home; learn to dance; or other things that you could do at home. In fact, “travelling to Europe” could still be done, kind of, virtually, with a decent VR headset and travel film- search online for suggestions. Buy eBooks or read free travel blogs stacked with photos upon photos of Greece, Venice, the Caribbean… or write up your own travel memoirs into a blog or book yourself.
    And in terms of learning to dance or paint - online class portals like Skillshare and CreativeLive have thousands of free or low-cost classes you can take to pick up a new skill.

  • Speak to your local welfare sources; to your employer; to your bank; to your service providers (electricity, etc) about what sort of assistance they can provide, if any. Some may be willing to defer or freeze payments temporarily while you’re in sudden hardship, though this may be more difficult when the rest of your country is in lockdown. But if you don’t ask, you don’t know. And some employers in Australia have committed to paying their casual staff if they are suddenly isolated or quarantined due to COVID19.

4) Keep your mind healthy. Meditation; mindfulness; yoga; deep breathing; and other calming techniques are useful in all kinds of situations, and for all ages and demographics. Isolation can be tough; you may miss the everyday social interactions you didn’t realise you get from the workplace or school or study institution; learning a meditation technique can be incredibly helpful for keeping your mind and body strong. Yes, meditation has significant health effects on the body, including lowering blood pressure, preventing illness, and improving your immunity. It may not prevent you from falling sick (including from coronavirus, unfortunately), but can help your mindset and physical health if you do happen to fall unwell, or if a loved one falls ill.

5) Keep social. Home isolation doesn’t mean you have to switch off your phone! Make time to call a friend each day. If you’re home with family or friends, make time for just having your usual meals together; exercising together; learning a fun new activity together; or playing board games together. An interesting article in the BBC recently showed some unexpectedly positive benefits from working from home and spending more time with loved ones in forced isolation in Wuhan and other parts of China.

6) Talk to someone for help. It’s also okay to speak to a phone or telehealth counsellor over Skype, Facetime or other platforms if you’re having trouble coping. If your employer offers an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) or other free confidential counselling service for their workers, you can access this over the phone or video call as a benefit of your employment. The Australian Government has finally approved funding for Medicare-enabled telehealth consults for GPs to see possible coronavirus and chronic illness patients remotely without having to physically come into the clinic, where they may be exposed to coronavirus or potentially infect others. There are numerous online psychologists and counsellors, with varying fee structures (mostly private out-of-pocket funding in Australia at the time of writing); and other telehealth services in other specialties including Psychiatry, Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Dietetics, Physiotherapy, and other specialties, which, if you see a current Specialist, you may be able to access. All it takes is a quick phone call or email to find out.

7) Your temporary quarantine/isolation is a gift that others don’t have. It may not seem like it immediately; but if you think about the poor doctors who died in Wuhan during the initial outbreak, while the world was trying to figure out what this mysterious new virus was; what the incubation period was; and how to prevent its spread; if you think about the several months’ head start you and your country have in identifying the cause and knowing more about what to expect from COVID19; we are truly, incredibly fortunate, and if we all act together with #compassion and #kindness, we still have time to fight this and stop this horrible disease from spreading and worsening its effects on the world.

Some thoughts on preparing for the Novel Coronavirus COVID-19

With the alarming spread of COVID-19 on everyone’s minds, it can be easy to feel helpless and dismal about the future. Life’s about accepting what we can’t control, and managing what we can. Here are a few suggestions for you to take action now, and not wait for a pandemic or otherwise to be declared.

  1. WASH YOUR HANDS PROPERLY. WITH SOAP.

We’ve had many people asking; “should I wear a mask? Should I avoid certain areas of town?” All the masks in the world would be useless to prevent infection transmission if we didn’t have proper hand washing technique, that anyone can do, as endorsed by the World Health Organisation (WHO). 

Sing “Happy Birthday To You” twice while washing. That’s the recommendation. (Aloud, if you wish!)

SOAP is key. And frequently. If you cough. If you sneeze from hay fever. Before and after you eat. 

If no soap, use alcohol-based hand rub. 

This goes for the flu as well. Influenza is not just spread by airway droplets; it is actually spread through contact transmission, ie. hands and other surface contact, just like gastroenteritis. Coronavirus (which is a name for a group of respiratory viruses, hence COVID-19 for the name of this particularly virulent subtype) is also spread in this way, just like the common cold. Hence, HANDWASHING WITH SOAP is important. 

I can’t emphasise it enough. Handwashing saves lives. And it’s annoying when people cough and sneeze without covering their mouths and noses in public (an accident is an accident, but if you’re being a tool, that’s just rude). And in Australia, we’re not at the stage right now where our Government is saying we have to wear masks as a precaution. And even if we were, we’d still say- WASH YOUR HANDS WITH SOAP. 

2. Minimise hand-to-hand transmission

So yes, avoiding handshakes is reasonable. 

3. Pay attention to the latest health updates from your local Government health authority. 

Your Federal or State Government; or the equivalent authority wherever you live, will be able to give you up to date advice in your area; on whether it’s safe to go out; to go to work/school; to attend particular events. Listen to the real news, not fake. 

Speaking of real news; drive-thru coronavirus testing has apparently taken off in Daegu, South Korea. Seems like a great way to reduce exposure risks to the community- and to healthcare workers (and their families), too.

4. Prepare for Online Work/Study/Telehealth

One of the only business models that would actually benefit from COVID-19 is telemedicine. 

The RACGP is calling on the Federal Government to allow a short-term Medicare rebate for Telehealth services to help enable consultations while minimising risk of infection transmission. In the US, where Telehealth is more mature, telemedicine providers are ramping up their capabilities and patients are being warned to expect more consultations online.

It won’t just be healthcare. Schools and universities are already in the midst of online classes for those stranded by travel bans and restrictions. EY and other multinational firms have cancelled some business travel and moved to online conferencing to reduce risks to their employees. We foresee professional development conferences and workshops increasingly being moved online across all industries.

So, if you have a remote working/studying option, prepare early for this, as a snap decision could be made by your Government/institution in a day.  Or if you’re self-employed, now would be a great time to see what services you could move online.

5. Pay attention to your travel insurance.

If you’re planning to travel somewhere, check what your travel insurance’s Product Disclosure Statement covers.

6. Be kind and compassionate

There’s absolutely no excuse for racism. Ever. 

It is NOT the fault of someone’s ethnicity or appearance that this virus has appeared. It’s APPALLING how ignorant people can be, and how widespread rudeness is. 

Health systems and local industries beyond health are already overstretched. By putting your prejudices in front and pointing fingers at people of particular appearance (and we’ve been victims of this!), you’re simply displaying how ignorant you are, and wasting time and energy alienating the very people who are trying to help you, or who are your neighbours in your local communities

No one wanted coronavirus to happen. It’ll be easier to get through together without hatred and fear.

Fashion and Sustainability: How Can Medical Workers Get Involved?

Next week, I’m excited to attend LEGACY Summit, presented by Ndless: The New Normal and Fashion Revolution.

LEGACY Summit is a Responsible Fashion Summit. It will have huge talks and workshops on sustainability; ethical work practices; the health issues of the textiles and fibres we wear and consume; and the impact of fashion on our planet. Whether you’re a startup, a consultant for McKinsey (who’ll be there too!), a student, or a curious industry outsider wanting to learn more, it’ll be fantastic to attend and meet great friends sharing the same interests.

It’s incredible (and btw, heads-up for my new project below!), and I can’t wait because it’s something I don’t really get to talk about with other doctors except as a consumer.

Living in Cairns last year, everyone was very conscious of sustainable living and recycling practices. The Great Barrier Reef is on our doorstep, and Banana, Sugar Cane farmers and Daintree rainforest residents and visitors coupled with the proximity to cyclones and the isolation of rural living meant that locals were very conscious of how we could save the planet, one small step at a time.

That includes being one of the first cities in the world to promote paper straws at their bars. Kids running projects like Straw No More on Instagram have done huge things to promote international awareness. Locals were alarmed that international tourists would be served canned drinks on board the Reef ferries; and then find that plastic straws included with the cans were often dumped into our beautiful ocean!!

Coral bleaching from global warming was also a frequent topic in the Cairns Post, and even the changing lifestyle habits of crocodiles were discussed in the media as a potential consequence of global warming. (Hint: the risk is higher in the summer, or wet season in the Far North. But really, just don’t swim in the waters up there, and beware the yellow signs warning of crocs!)

Anyway, as healthcare workers, and as a doctor, I frequently find that I’m having to explain myself when I tell even close friends that I like fashion.

Yes, I love getting dressed up, I love understanding my style choices, and I LOVE understanding the impact of textiles on my own body when dressing for humidity vs frigid temps (and that’s been a frequent consideration when flying between Cairns and Victoria, the ACT and Tasmania in winter!).

But I also love global health, and the fact that the whole world, from Hong Kong Tatler to Calvin Harris to our supermarkets, is talking about sustainability. (Medical Pantry is also inspired by this!)

I think it’s silly and ignorant to dismiss fashion as frivolous. We could spend all day talking about the body shaming issues that have led many to believe this. But as the planet’s largest industry, as clinicians and healthcare workers (and social enterprise startups!), it would be amiss of us to not acknowledge fashion as an important topic that can be worked on by doctors, nurses, physios, dietitians (plant-based fibres, anyone?), podiatrists (think of the great sole materials that can be made from fabric offcuts! Think of Allbirds shoes and other cool startups!), and others in medicine and healthcare.

At any rate, our patients care. It would be wrong to not acknowledge that.

4) Advocate with your College if you’re a member. The RACP has a portal for Climate Change resources for Doctors, including links to The Lancet studies.

5) Open your mind and heart to the possibilities when you don’t silo industries and topics into separate categories. Garment workers in developing nations working in factories with poor ethical practices suffer the health consequences of these practices. Healthy eating for the planet is also an important topic that’s related. EAT Foundation is a recommended resource to get involved with.

6) Global Ideas and other global health events and forums, and webinars, and ecourses, and MOOCs (see our Resources page!) are all great ways to get involved and learn. Once we grow together, we’ll have stronger voices to advocate for all this.

The Tech Revolution in Regional Australia, and Opportunities for Future Growth

I have a real love for Queensland, and regional Australia’s potential to be world leaders in innovation and creativity. This article has heaps of resources and events to be aware of if you’re keen to get started with your big idea in Queensland, whether in the big city or further out. Share your thoughts below.

There's a tech revolution Down Under- and we have ideas on where the next opportunities will be.

As a frequent city-hopper throughout Australia, we've noticed that the tech revolution isn't solely limited to our most famous capital cities.

The rural towns dotting the 2300km expanse of the Great Barrier Reef have long been subject to “boom or bust” economic conditions in Australia. With the recent Australian mining sector downturn affecting once-bustling cities throughout Central and Northern Queensland, the time is ripe for entrepreneurialism to take place.

The Australian Federal Government's Innovation Agenda has helped foster an environment for numerous innovation events. One such event coming up is Myriad, the global entrepreneurs’ conference to be held in Brisbane, Queensland’s capital, at the end of March. Bringing speakers from TechCrunch, Estonia, Western Europe and rural Queensland to the city, the event promises to help connect and inspire attendees as Australia’s answer to SXSW. 

Myriad’s timing coincides with the World Science Festival, which will host Hack The Reef, the world’s first hackathon dedicated to the Great Barrier Reef. Held in Townsville, one of Northern Queensland’s largest Reef gateposts, Hack the Reef will bring participants together to brainstorm solutions for the Reef’s rapid bleaching crisis, with global warming sending water temperatures 1-2 degrees Celsius higher than usual and irreversibly bleaching the beautiful coral. Hack the Reef will send winners to Myriad, and help boost tech and entrepreneurial skills in a region not known for its Opera House or laneway coffee spots.

Maker spaces and coworking centres have also opened up in Mackay, Cairns and Townsville. Startup Mackay is a hub for the sugar cane city and former mining hub now focusing on tourism. The Assisted Devices Hackathon will be held in Mackay, Toowoomba and Townsville later this year, with support from Advanced Manufacturing Queensland helping to re-energise Queensland manufacturing and engineering. theSPACE Cairns and Canvas Coworking in Toowoomba also host startup events and coworking space for locals and visitors. 

Additionally, Australia’s largest corporate startup accelerator Slingshot has announced a presence in Cairns this year. It will dedicate funding and resources to projects focusing on travel, hospitality and entertainment in this city of 160,000 people which hosts international guests such as Elton John. Slingshot is known for running one of Australia’s largest health-tech accelerators, and currently has Australia’s first Human Resources Tech accelerator open for applications to be the next Freelancer or similar. 

Finally, small business groups in these towns continue to host events for local startups and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs) alike. Small Biz Big Future has been held in Cairns for several years’ running, bringing together web developers, agricultural, marketing and legal experts in the region to deliver Top 3 Business Tips for attendees. 

Advance Queensland also completed a regional tour featuring 6 of Queensland's most successful entrepreneurs, including Shark Tank Australia's Steve Baxter and We Are Hunted's Stephen Phillips, visiting ten rural cities to share their experiences with locals. 

How else can regional towns pivot from existing business models and upskill in entrepreneurship? Currently, the options for rural business owners and aspiring entrepreneurs are to attend local events or education providers; otherwise, if they can afford it, to relocate to one of the capital cities. In our opinion, education shouldn't be limited to local TAFE centres and universities, which are often costly and not suitable for time-poor owner-operators. It's also worthwhile remembering that many small business owners are successful despite not completing school, or not having a strong tech culture within an Indigenous Australian community. Private tech skill educators such as General Assembly and Academy Xi are based in major capitals such as Melbourne and Sydney (with GA opening in Brisbane). These cities are doing their bit for entrepreneurship, but are becoming saturated with choice of events. Surely such schools could also aim to broaden their reach to rural areas by offering free or paid video access to classes and talks. 

In times of crisis, there is a long-held resilience demonstrated by local farmers, retailers, and other small business owners, with communities devoted to buying local. Much can be learnt from business owners who have dealt with cyclones, droughts, banana plantation destruction and international trade adjustments. Perhaps a platform needs to be developed for giving these stalwart regional business owners a chance to share their lessons virtually with young and tech-savvy entrepreneurs across Australian cities. This could help introduce a new revenue stream to such business owners, in a valuable collaborative effort of Ideas Exchange. 

Australia's current Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, a former tech entrepreneur himself, has tried to shine a light upon regional innovation. Taking in rural Queensland towns such as Bundaberg and Rockhampton last year, Prime Minister Turnbull was impressed with technologies such as drones used by farmers for crop surveillance and pest control. As mentioned during his visit, it's important to remember that entrepreneurs are not just city-based friends in T-shirts coding in a garage for fun. The real need for tech and entrepreneurial skills comes from those who are geographically isolated and time- and resource-poor. 

Ongoing support for local businesses and education providers, whether rural or metropolitan, will continue to drive the future of Australian innovation. We'd be glad to hear your thoughts on this article and other ideas you may have.  

Melbourne Social Enterprise Pioneers Model: Giving Through Medical Education

Who knew that by educating yourself for your fellowship exams, you are also helping by giving to those less fortunate?

Two Melbourne medical doctors decided to give through their medical education company, PhysEd, a two-week intensive preparation course for doctors preparing for the Royal Australasian College of Physicians’ Basic Physician Training Written Exam.

         

Inspired by ethicist Peter Singer’s book and organisation, The Life You Can Save, PhysEd gives 5% of revenue to charity, donating over five figures in its first year. The specialty exams are a gruelling time in any doctor’s life, and attending a course has statistically shown to improve your chance of passing. Blake Mycoskie is known for pioneering the One-for-One retail model, where a company gives something for every item that’s sold. In TOMS’ case, that’s a pair of shoes to a community in need for every pair of TOMS sold around the world.

Blake was inspired after taking a brief sabbatical from his former startup (and after “The Amazing Race” in America). As many startup founders (and healthcare workers!) discover, it’s hard to switch off. Early into his trip to Argentina, he was struck by the number of children walking barefoot on the hot roads, because their families couldn’t afford to purchase shoes. Blake goes into detail about his early days finding a local shoemaker in Argentina; working out the supply chain without having fashion experience; hiring his first interns; and how they spread the word about TOMS. Since then, TOMS has grown into a multimillion-dollar company, and Blake has created a venture fund for social entrepreneurs to help others create good from their companies.

Other companies such as Warby Parker for eyeglasses have found success with a for-profit model of giving. Many people believe that non-profits are more subject to instability, being reliant upon donations and philanthropy. It could be argued that social enterprise is a more sustainable business model long-term, where a social enterprise is defined as a for-profit business that serves to do good as its core mission.

With “Start Something That Matters,” Blake shares his thoughts from TOMS’ journey, and gives actionable tips on how you can do the same. A very inspiring and uplifting read, including case studies from other companies.

Breaking The Boundaries You’ve Set Yourself: Thoughts and Events To Inspire Your Tech Journey

How do you learn about tech as an outsider?

For awhile, before The Medical Startup became an idea, I was toying with creating something in tech.

I was a full-time doctor in a Melbourne hospital, spending all my spare time studying for fellowship.

When you’re at that stage in your career, you’re usually facing another four to six years of focusing on fellowship full-time.

I was surrounded by peers who were working towards the same goal.

It was all we knew at that time. We’d forgotten what life was like pre-training, it was deemed a “waste” if you paused for breath, and it took a long, long time to learn to breathe above water again.

So it seemed impossible.

But when you start to act towards those “strange” goals, the world opens up beyond anything you’d imagine. 

Attending events and online webinars helped tremendously. I was surrounded by others who were teaching themselves, too.

I started learning how to adapt to new environments, even more new than running a Code Blue at 3am.

I started learning the lingo of life outside of medicine.

And the love of learning I have for medicine sustained me through this journey, too.

So here’s a thought for the next time you’re thinking, “I can’t do this” or “It’s impossible, I have no background in this area.”

Think laterally about what you’re telling yourself.

Is it really impossible?

 You’re not just a doctor.

You’re a woman in tech.

You’re not just a nurse.

You’re a father of three.

You’re not just a clinician who sees patients one by one at scheduled appointments at your clinic.

You’re facilitating their wellness beyond their current condition. How they are at home, at work, at the shops and their daily lives.

You have to stop thinking of yourself as a single job description. 

Otherwise, when you’re stuck, how will you remember who you are again?

Think about those who have the courage to uproot countries and settle in a new culture, starting from scratch with their careers again. Often, their degrees aren’t recognised at their new home.

Or think of those who graduate from one degree, then use their determination and self-belief (even when it’s down) to apply to study post-graduate medicine or another degree.

Don’t underestimate yourself.

We’re all learning, after all.

And that shiny, suited person speaking up on the big stage? They had to start somewhere, too. 

This is literally just a random post after reflecting on recent events and conversations. You have to normalise curiosity and your hunger for knowledge. 

Thinking about it, there are a ton of events coming up around the world that may help you along your journey; I’ll list them below. Perhaps you’ll find some of them useful, too.

A couple are med tech, but most are actually more general and will help you learn the vibe and get comfortable in the tech and entrepreneurship worlds, too.

Who knows what new friends you’ll make, and what skills and knowledge you’ll bring back to your usual lives? You’ll almost certainly realise that you already know more about tech than you thought you did.

Be inspired.

  • The Melbourne Accelerator Program Launch Party 2017. Last year, two Melbourne digital health startups founded by doctors were part of the program. Nebula Health and CNSDose have both benefited hugely from MAP, with Nebula now partnering with hospitals and surgeons, and CNSDose breaking ground as part of Texas Medical Center’s Innovation program.

  • General Assembly, a tech education company running coding bootcamps, one-day workshops and even two-hour events across their centres in Australia, Asia, the US and UK. Visit generalassemb.ly to find your nearest centre and see what’s available. I’ve found their events very helpful.

  • HIC, Australia’s premier health informatics (digital health) conference, run by HISA, the Health Informatics Society of Australia. It’ll be in Brisbane in August, and I’ll be presenting as part of the UX (User Experience) workshop, along with others interested in digital health. I really recommend joining HISA, HiNZ, HIMSS (including their APAC branch), COACH (Canada) or other organisations as a way to get access to valuable resources, networks and skills for eHealth.

  • COACH, Canada’s annual health informatics event early June.

  • HIMSS Asia-Pacific Summit, in Singapore in September. (As a member of HiNZ, you also get full automatic membership to HIMSS Asia-Pacific.)

  • HiNZ, which we wrote about last year; it’ll be in Rotorua this year.

  • The Global Ideas events in Melbourne, inspiring global health innovators with skills including tech and human-centred design thinking. (Read about founder Dr Lloyd Nash’s journey here.)

  • Vogue Codes, an Australian event running in Sydney and Melbourne in August aiming to inspire more women to take up careers in STEM. Speakers include the founders of ClassPass and Shoes of Prey as well as female members of Australia’s startup and tech communities. Being a woman in STEM who loves fashion and the arts, (even if I don’t look the part!), this event really speaks to me, knowing that although society places us into simplistic career boxes (“Medicine!” “Science!” “Engineer!” “Designer!”), we’re much more than just a “science person” or “arty person” 100% of the time.

  • Vivid Sydney’s Ideas program, coming up this week.

  • Girl Geek Academy, an Australian organisation aiming to educate 1 million girls and women in tech by 2025. It also has events in the US.
